Senator Rounds, co-chair of the Senate AI Caucus, emphasized AI’s role in accelerating medical research, suggesting that the vast majority of cancers could be cured within the next five years. “Over the next five years, we can cure the vast majority of cancers that afflict mankind,” he stated, underscoring the potential for AI to significantly enhance research capabilities. Rounds noted that AI can process more research in milliseconds than a single lab could in over 200 years, offering unprecedented opportunities for breakthroughs in diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

He highlighted initiatives like Guide AI and Med Shield, which aim to coordinate databases and protect against pandemic threats.

Rounds also discussed AI’s critical role in national security, noting that it accelerates the development of offensive and defensive weapon systems. He acknowledged China’s advancements in AI and space, emphasizing that while China is not yet on par with the U.S., they are rapidly closing the gap.
Representative Nunn on AI in Agriculture and Defense
Representative Zach Nunn highlighted AI’s transformative impact on agriculture, citing a potential 70% increase in agricultural output in Iowa due to precision farming. He noted that AI enables drones to target individual weeds, helping farmers become bioscientists by optimizing planting and livestock management.
In defense, Nunn emphasized the need for the U.S. to outpace China in AI innovation, particularly in countering influence operations. He mentioned legislative efforts like the AI Plan Act and the CLARITY Act, aimed at streamlining regulations and building a U.S.-led blockchain infrastructure to manage future data needs

Both Senator Rounds and Representative Nunn emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and private sectors to drive AI innovation.
