Google’s Kent Walker Calls for Unified Standards on AI

Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Google and Alphabet, joined the 50th episode of the Washington AI Network Podcast with a clear message: artificial intelligence is no longer operating in the background—it’s now central to global competition, public policy, and national security.

For over a decade, AI has quietly powered tools like Search, Translate, and Maps. But that era of “quiet AI” is ending. According to Walker, the technology is moving into a phase where transparency, public engagement, and global leadership are key.

“We’re not just seeing scientific breakthroughs—we’re seeing a breakthrough in how we make breakthroughs,” Walker said, pointing to AlphaFold, Google DeepMind’s protein-folding project. By open-sourcing the structure of more than 200 million proteins, the tool has dramatically accelerated drug discovery, with some AI-generated medicines already entering clinical trials.

The episode offered a wide-angle view of Google’s current posture on AI—one that’s more public, more political, and more urgent. Walker emphasized the need for faster federal adoption of AI tools, streamlined procurement and investments in infrastructure—from permitting reform to energy capacity—that support next-generation tech development.

But the most striking part of the conversation may have been Walker’s assessment of global competition.“We thought we were a couple years ahead. Now we think we’re a few months ahead,” he said, referencing China’s rapid scaling of AI resources. With over 200,000 AI startups and hundreds of millions of users engaging with large language models, China is moving fast—and so must the U.S.

Walker also touched on the rise of “agentic AI,” the future of quantum computing, and Google’s partnerships with national security agencies. He described generative AI as “a tool that teaches you how to use the tool,” highlighting how it levels the playing field across industries and professions.

Hosted by Washington AI Network founder Tammy Haddad, the episode marked a milestone for the podcast—and a moment of reflection on how far AI has come, and how quickly the ground is shifting.
